Fiji Suspends New Applications for Citizenship by Naturalisation

Fiji’s Ministry of Immigration has temporarily suspended all new applications for citizenship by naturalisation, effective 24 October 2025. Permanent Secretary for Immigration Aliki Salusalu said the move is part of a review of the Citizenship of Fiji Act 2009, aimed at ensuring the law remains consistent, clear, and aligned with future Fiji immigration policy goals.

Meanwhile, travellers planning a visit can still apply for Fiji eVisa online to enter the country without delays. This Fiji citizenship suspension will remain in effect until further notice while the government completes its legislative review and amendments.

Citizenship Law Under Review

Officials explained that the 2009 citizenship law is being updated to maintain legal clarity and keep pace with the country’s future policy directions. As part of this overhaul, authorities have paused all new naturalisation requests so that no new cases are accepted under rules that are about to change.

New naturalisation applications are expected to resume once these legal changes are enacted, but no timeline has been announced for when the process will reopen.

Other Citizenship Pathways Unaffected

The ministry confirmed that this pause does not apply to individuals who have already submitted their naturalisation requests. Any applications lodged before the cut-off date will still be reviewed and completed under the existing legal framework.

Additionally, citizenship by registration – another pathway to becoming a Fijian citizen – remains open and will be processed as usual under existing procedures.

This ensures that other routes to Fijian citizenship remain available to eligible individuals despite the temporary naturalisation pause.

Additional Notes

  • Citizenship by registration remains unaffected.
  • The overstay advisory for regional students (undated) remains unchanged.
  • There are no visa-specific tweaks associated with this announcement.
